Lapped seam

HELPFUL HINT:

Lap vertical seams away from the center and horizontal seams down. Avoid using pins on fabrics that mark – use double-sided basting tape instead.

WELT AND DOUBLE WELT SEAMS

Similar to lapped seams, welt seams are particularly suitable for heavyweight fabrics. Again the seam is formed with two rows of straight stitching. The first is a regular seam with right sides together, the second is to catch the seam allowance. Having stitched the seam, grade the seam allowances, which reduces bulk, by trimming the under seam allowance to 1/4 in (6 mm). Then, working from the right side, sew again 1/4–1/2 in (6–13 mm) from the seam, catching the untrimmed seam allowance in the stitching. This will encase the trimmed seam allowance at the same time (diagram 4). A double welt seam has another row of stitching close to the seam line.
